1. Your parents were at least 75% correct. They just didn’t explain well enough, and if they did, you couldn’t understand.
2. To start, you should absolutely write/bake/work/sing/build for exposure. Or for terrible pay or no pay. Just set a limit and get good quick.
3. A kind, generous boss is better than a high-paying one.
4. A friendly agreeable employee is better than a brilliant weird one.
5. Be great with numbers. If not, be great at selling.
6. Your work is only worth what someone will pay for it and what you will accept. Nothing else matters.
7. Offline: You don’t need to be great; be greater than your peers.
8. Online: You don’t need to be great; be more visible than your peers.
9. Go where the thing you cherish the most is cherished the most.
10. If you are not driven, better be smart. If you aren’t either, better be lucky. If you are none of the 3, better be dead.
